Welcome

to my personal blog. Here I post examples of my photography and writing. I specialize in making unique and highly detailed photographs. Notice I said making and not taking. Yes I take photos but a lot of time and work is involved in pushing and punishing the pixels in my images to achieve the look I like.

Please feel free make comments about any of my words or photos. I enjoy constructive critiques, learning about locations to shoot or photography techniques. Click on the "Share Article" link to share any of my photos via Flickr, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

Want to use one of my posts in your own blog? No problem, but please make sure it links back to the original post here and do the right thing and give me credit. Don't copy my words, crop the images, remove the watermarks or claim my work as your own. This has happened more times than I can count so I've had to report copyright violations to ISP's and regrettably the violators blog is usually taken down.

Can't we all just get along?

Back in Black on Acid

Back in Black on Acid, originally uploaded by big_pixel_pusher.

Ok I have no idea what make or model this car is. All I know is it was massive and low slung. I would guess in an accident it would tear up any Honda or Toyota and suffer very little damage. Just look at that bumper! I should mention that while I was busy taking this shot, Kathy was getting some awesome shots of a Thunderbird that had pulled in when I wasn't looking. You can actually see me taking this shot in her photo (look on the right) here

1955 Ford Fairlane Sunliner

Whenever I see one of these classic cars, I wonder how and where the owner finds spare parts. They would have to be next to impossible to find wouldn't they? I can't seem to find replacement arm rests for my van and it's not anywhere close to 55 years old. How do you find critical engine parts that are needed just to keep the car in operation? I guess that just makes it all the more wondrous to see one of these beauties glide into one of the parking spaces at this classic drive in. If you are ever in the Downey area on a Wednesday evening don't miss it.

Hotter than Georgia Asphalt

Ok I wasn't in Georgia. This was taken in Santa Ana, California but just the same I think summer is here. When taking photos of cars, I usually just collapse my tripod completely and spread out the legs as wide as they will go so the camera is only 6 inches above the pavement. This of course means in order to frame the shot, I need to be laying on the ground. This is generally not a problem in the cooler months but today the asphalt parking lot was so hot, I almost got roasted. Gotta borrow the wife's yoga mat or something.

Red and White Delight

Red and White Delight, originally uploaded by big_pixel_pusher.

Kathy and I decided to drive over to Bob's for the Wednesday night car show. We had dinner and talked while watching the classic cars roll in. Afterward, we had started walking around when this '55 Ford Fairlane Sunliner stopped me in my tracks. It was so clean and perfectly restored, I was just in awe. I think I took 5 or 6 HDR sequences of this car alone. I met the owner, nice guy. He was kicking around the idea of selling this car. I gave him the address for this website. Hopefully he will see his baby here.

Bring on the Night

Bring on the Night, originally uploaded by big_pixel_pusher.

Darkness falls over the former Johnnies Broiler and drive-in. The combination of the building's classic architecture with the vintage cars occupying every available parking space sets quite a interesting mood. I could almost hear Wolfman Jack on the radio.

At the top of the low down crowd

I always get lots of lens flare (digitally removed here) with my 14mm sigma f2.8 lens especially when I point it toward the setting sun. This 1940 Chevy Master Deluxe looks so cool it makes up for it. I had to ask some of the Gente to excuse me so I could take this shot before the sun sank below the horizon. Bob's Big Boy Broiler (BBBB) in Downey CA. Kathy shot the same car on the same day. You can see her version here.

Cadillac Ranch

3 classic Cadillacs in a row at the Bob's Big Boy Broiler car show in Downey California. Check out those cool tail fins. Does it get better than this?

Green Machine

Green Machine, originally uploaded by big_pixel_pusher.

Kathy had been telling me about the car show they hold every Wednesday at the Bob's Big Boy Broiler in Downey. There were a lot of nice cars at this show and it got packed with people as the evening progressed. The sun was setting as I took this shot. I don't know if the participants (who were all very cool) knew what to make of Kathy and I. We were both using our big DSLR's, carrying tripods and laying down on the floor to get these low angle shots. Most people were using point and shoot cameras with their flashes.
